Scientific and technological innovation cannot develop without government supports. While a common view states that governments’ intervening measures to scientific research should not include restrictions on private companies. From my perspective, scientific research may be more effective via being controlled by governments.
One accepted statement is that private companies are motivated byprofit. In general, returns to researchers are highly dependent of outcomes inprivate companies, namely, researchers may be more likely to enhance the workload since they can get high income if their researches are successful. By contrast, for those who work in governments, they might be reluctant to work overtime due to equal returns.
On the other hand, the reluctance of handling environmental pollution is a main problem from private companies. Because they only focus on the achievement rather than considering the impacts caused to environment. For instance, many factories might pollute local river, or even increase carbon emission. In contrast to governments, private companies usually refuse to spend capitals on environmental protection.
Additionally, people would get a sense of safety when they purchase the goods produced by governments. Empirically, governments are widely possession of various resources and well-educated labor forces, which all are important to efficiency and effectiveness of scientific research. Nevertheless, some private companies might ignore products’ safety for higher profit relatively.
In conclusion, although scientists working in private companies areusually motivated to accomplish tasks more quickly. The awareness of environmental protection is also needed for private companies. In addition, due to governments’ extensive material and human resources, people may think scientific researches done by governments are more reliable.
